Botox vs. Fillers

Whether you’ve noticed wrinkles beginning to form around your eyes, or sagging skin in general, faces inevitably change over time. With a seemingly infinite number of anti-aging treatments on the market, it can be difficult to know which option is best for you.

Fillers, and neuromodulator injections like Botox allow you to delay the signs of aging for a long time, but which is right for you?

What is Botox?

A brand name for a type of neuromodulator, Botox is a popular treatment for minor lines and wrinkles. It works by temporarily preventing the affected underlying muscle from moving. Botox is most commonly used to treat wrinkling that is caused by muscles that are used to create facial expressions – typically in the upper areas of the face. Botox is approved by the FDA for the treatment of crows-feet, frown lines in between the eyebrows, and forehead lines.

As with any medical procedure, there are factors to consider before receiving Botox. You should avoid neuromodulators of any sort if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, are known to be allergic to Botox, or have an underlying muscle or nerve condition.

What are Fillers?

As opposed to neuromodulators which affect how the muscle works, fillers are substances that are injected to replace lost volume in the affected areas. Where Botox is most effective where muscle contractions occur, fillers are best for lines that are present at all times – even when muscles aren’t contracting. One of the most common applications for fillers is around the mouth to treat nasolabial folds – or laugh lines. They can also be used to re-contour the face – especially around the cheeks and lips.

If you have allergies to any component of a filler, including lidocaine which is often mixed with fillers, avoid them altogether. Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an infection in the injection area should also stay away from fillers.
