Breast reconstruction with implants is a popular option among women who have undergone mastectomies and are seeking surgery to restore their feminine figure. There are two different types of breast reconstruction that use implants and your surgeon can help guide you toward the best option for your unique situation.

The first option is often referred to as a one-stage immediate breast reconstruction. This type of procedure is performed at the same time as the mastectomy. If your surgeon recommends this technique for your breast reconstruction, he or she will place your implants immediately after your general surgeon removes your breast tissue. This can be beneficial as your general surgeon won’t need to remove as much skin and you will not have to undergo two separate surgeries.

Another technique is called two-stage delayed reconstruction, and is often suggested for women whose skin tissues and chest wall are too tight for the safe placement of breast implants immediately following their mastectomy. If your surgeon recommends this technique for you, he or she will place an expander under your skin and chest muscle to help make room for your implant. Over a period of four to six months, your surgeon will slowly fill the expander with a saltwater solution. Once the skin around your breast has stretched enough, the implant can be inserted and the expander will be removed. By waiting until your body is ready for the implant, your results will look and feel much more natural.
