Botox vs. Fillers

Whether you’ve noticed wrinkles beginning to form around your eyes, or sagging skin in general, faces inevitably change over time. With a seemingly infinite number of anti-aging treatments on the market, it can be difficult to know which option is best for you.

Fillers, and neuromodulator injections like Botox allow you to delay the signs of aging for a long time, but which is right for you?

What is Botox?

A brand name for a type of neuromodulator, Botox is a popular treatment for minor lines and wrinkles. It works by temporarily preventing the affected underlying muscle from moving. Botox is most commonly used to treat wrinkling that is caused by muscles that are used to create facial expressions – typically in the upper areas of the face. Botox is approved by the FDA for the treatment of crows-feet, frown lines in between the eyebrows, and forehead lines.

As with any medical procedure, there are factors to consider before receiving Botox. You should avoid neuromodulators of any sort if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, are known to be allergic to Botox, or have an underlying muscle or nerve condition.

What are Fillers?

As opposed to neuromodulators which affect how the muscle works, fillers are substances that are injected to replace lost volume in the affected areas. Where Botox is most effective where muscle contractions occur, fillers are best for lines that are present at all times – even when muscles aren’t contracting. One of the most common applications for fillers is around the mouth to treat nasolabial folds – or laugh lines. They can also be used to re-contour the face – especially around the cheeks and lips.

If you have allergies to any component of a filler, including lidocaine which is often mixed with fillers, avoid them altogether. Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an infection in the injection area should also stay away from fillers.

Tightening Your Tummy After a Baby

Having a baby is transformative, changing your life forever. It’s also a body-altering event, often with lasting impact. For most women, these changes include loose skin around the lower tummy, stretch marks, and general abdominal sagging. With diet and exercise, you can often minimize your new tummy pouch. But these efforts may not be enough to completely reverse the effects that pregnancy has had on your body.

Long-Term Effects of Pregnancy on Your Tummy

Your belly expands rapidly when you’re carrying a child. This usually leads to stretch marks. They may fade over time, but they rarely disappear completely, making these marks one of the most common long-term effects on your tummy after giving birth.

Diastasis recti is another potential consequence of a fast-growing tummy. Pregnancy stretches your abdominal connective tissue and often pushes your stomach muscles apart. This is what causes a droopy tummy, a protruding belly and decreased muscle tone for months after delivery, despite healthy eating and dedicated exercise. Many new moms deal with excess skin and urinal incontinence, as well. If these are some of the issues you’re struggling with after pregnancy, a tummy tuck offers an effective solution.

How a Tummy Tuck Can Help Restore Your Body After Pregnancy

Abdominoplasty, commonly called a tummy tuck, surgically tightens and contours your lower abdomen. Our surgeon will remove the extra skin you’ve developed over your pregnancy and the excess fat in the lower tummy area. Any stretch marks that are in that specific area of your belly will be gone, as well.

After your procedure, not only will your tummy have a firmer, more toned appearance, you are likely to feel better. Being a mom is hard work. Regaining your pre-pregnancy body can improve your self-esteem and your mood. Minimizing or completely eliminating incontinence is another bonus.

If you’d like to learn whether you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck, contact Bayside Center Plastic Reconstructive Surgery to schedule a consultation. With nearly a decade of intensive reconstructive and plastic surgery training, Dr. Roach is the plastic surgeon of choice in the Tampa area. Request a free cosmetic consult today.

What Are Gummy Bear Implants?

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures in the country, but the biggest reservation many women have is whether their breasts will look and feel natural afterwards. Gummy bear implants aim to change that, with a unique composition that results in a more natural-seeming result than other implant options.

That natural look and feel comes from a firm gel silicone combined with a layered gel outer shell, as opposed to saline-filled implants or softer silicone alternatives. This design allows them to have a consistency that is neither too hard nor too soft, while retaining their shape even if the outer shell somehow ruptures. These characteristics — similar to the gummy bear candy that’s loved by many — are what earned these implants their endearing nickname.

As opposed to traditional circular implants, gummy bear implants more closely simulate the natural curvature of the breast. Increased projection at the bottom and a natural looking taper towards the top allow the implants to rest in a natural teardrop shape.

Candidates have no shortage of options when it comes to shape, too. There are over 20 different shapes available from the three major suppliers of gummy bear implants.

Additionally, gummy bear implants offer a number of other advantages over alternative implant types:

  • Better shape retention – Because of the thicker material used, gummy bear implants are able to maintain their shape for longer periods of time than other implants.
  • Less likely to rupture – An unfortunate side effect for many women in the long term is implant rupture or leakage. The silicone gel in gummy bear implants makes it such that uneven strain isn’t put on the outer shell of the implant, reducing the likelihood of leakage over time.
  • Less risk of capsular contracture – A normal phenomenon for those with breast augmentation is for scar tissue to form around the implants. The hardened capsule that forms as a result is one of the most common issues with breast implants, but due to the unique composition of gummy bear implants, it is less likely to happen.

Choosing the right type of breast implant for your augmentation is a deeply personal choice that should be discussed with your doctor beforehand. Whether you choose gummy bear or a traditional implant material, Dr. Roach is here to help. Mini Facelift vs. Full Facelift – Which Is Right for You?

People doing what they can to look younger for longer is nothing new. Technology and technique is always advancing in the cosmetic surgery industry, and there are more options than ever for those looking to rejuvenate their face and seemingly go back in time. If you’ve spent much time researching, you’ve likely come across the facelift and the mini facelift. They are two of the most common cosmetic procedures, but they have some differences.

Full Facelift

For the absolute maximum in rejuvenation, a full facelift is the gold standard for many people. Full facelifts remove excess skin around the face, and tighten the underlying tissues below the jawline, cheeks, neck, and middle of the face. Full facelifts are great for eliminating loose skin around the entire face and reducing wrinkles in general.

Due to their comprehensive nature, full facelifts are inpatient procedures that use general anesthesia and take several hours to carry out, sometimes requiring an overnight stay in the hospital. Recovery times are longer than those for a mini facelift but offer more permanent results.

Mini Facelift

If you have just one or two problem areas you want to address, or you don’t want to deal with general anesthesia and longer recovery times, the mini facelift is a great option. This procedure is great for reducing minor sagging around the cheeks or neck, and are less invasive than a full facelift, involving just a few small incisions under local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes less than two hours, and you can expect recovery time to take around a week.

Benefits of Post-Pregnancy Breast Augmentation

The female body is a wonder for how resilient it is through the pregnancy and post-birth phases of life. Even though it goes through huge changes in shape, size, and function through these times, sometimes things don’t quite go back to how they were before. Many new mothers turn to breast augmentation following breast feeding and pregnancy as a way of restoring their appearance to their pre-pregnancy days.

Here are just a few facts about the impact of breastfeeding and pregnancy on breast shape:

  • Many women’s breasts tend to look “deflated” after breastfeeding
  • It is common for women to have less breast volume after breastfeeding and pregnancy
  • Extra skin or sagging after breastfeeding is also common

Breast augmentation can be a great option if any of these apply to you.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

  • Implants can help restore lost volume after pregnancy and enhance fullness to improve a deflated appearance
  • Beyond improving the size of your breasts, augmentation can improve the shape of your breasts as well
  • If you’ve experienced sagging after pregnancy or breastfeeding, augmentation can restore a perkier look that enhances fullness and cleavage

What Type of Implants Are Best?

Many new mothers opt for silicone implants after pregnancy and breastfeeding for the softer feeling they provide over saline implants. Silicone implants also tend to wrinkle and ripple less than saline implant. “Gummy bear” implants are a third option that use a thicker gel and a tear drop shave that gives a very perky and natural result. These are popular with patients who want fuller breasts, but want them to appear as natural as possible.

The Bayside Center is highly experienced with new mothers wanting to get their pre-pregnancy looks back. If you’re looking for breast augmentation after your pregnancy, look no further than Dr. Roach. Call us at 1-813-528-8744 for more information or to schedule a complimentary consultation today.

Cosmetic Surgery vs. Plastic Surgery

If you heard one of your friends say they wanted to have cosmetic surgery done, and another say that they want plastic surgery, would you think they were talking about the same thing? If so, you’re not the only one. Doctors and patients alike use the two terms almost interchangeably. While they are similar in how they are performed, the schools of thought are actually very different.

Two Different Goals

Both types of surgery address improving a patient’s body, but the reasons and goals for each are surprisingly different.

To help differentiate between the two, try thinking of cosmetic surgery as revamping the landscaping on your property. You’re increasing curb appeal and improving the look of your property, but you aren’t fixing something that was hurting your home’s functionality. Cosmetic surgery works the same way on the body, and because the areas being operated on already function correctly, cosmetic surgery is elective.

Cosmetic surgery procedures include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast lift
  • Breast Enlargement
  • Dark circle treatment
  • Botox injections
  • Body contouring
  • Liposuction
  • Tummy tuck

If cosmetic surgery can be equated to your home’s landscaping, think of plastic surgery like repairing the roof or fixing a broken window. Plastic surgery’s primary focus is on restoring function to parts of the body that are not fully operational due to birth defects, disease, or other trauma. Many plastic surgeons complete the training necessary to perform cosmetic surgery, further blurring the lines between the two practices.

In fact, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons changed its name in 1999 to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to communicate the message that plastic and reconstructive surgeries are the same thing.

Plastic surgery procedures include:

  • Breast reconstruction
  • Mastectomy reconstruction
  • Nipple reconstruction
  • Burn repair
  • Cleft palate repair
  • Scar revision surgery

Whether you’re looking for enhanced aesthetics through cosmetic surgery or reconstructive surgery to correct a dysfunction, Dr. Roach at the Bayside Center can help. Call us at 1-813-528-8744 to schedule your complimentary consultation today.

What is Body Contouring?

Working out and eating healthy are instrumental in living a healthy life. And while these efforts are your best bet for weight loss, they’re often not enough to eliminate body fat everywhere you want. Loose, saggy skin can also pose a problem. But plastic surgery allows you to accomplish what nature, diet, and exercise alone cannot. Through strategic body contouring procedures, an accomplished surgeon like Dr. Roach can work to smooth and sculpt your body to help attain the shape you desire.

Dependent upon your desired results, you may need different procedures for various areas of your body. Some common options are Ultrasonic Assisted Lipoplasty, the Tumescent Technique, fat transfers and body lifts. Dr. Roach applies his experience, skill, and knowledge to perform these procedures, and others, to contour the bodies of his Florida patients.

Sculpt Your Waist and Stomach

An Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a popular procedure for flattening and tightening your stomach. Patients who have already gotten the best results possible from exercise and diet are optimal candidates for this procedure.

Reshape Your Hips, Thighs, and Buns

Body lifts on the buttocks and thighs can enhance the appearance of your lower body. And the skilled application of liposuction may also be indicated for more refined sculpting.

Tighten Your Upper Arms

An arm lift, or brachioplasty removes that extra skin under your upper arms to give them a toned, more tightened appearance. Liposuction may also be necessary to remove excess fat in this area.

Tackle Excess Skin From Dramatic Weight Loss

A body lift can help address the problem of hanging, saggy skin due to extreme weight loss. Dr. Roach can concentrate on specific areas of your body or multiple problem spots, depending upon your requirements.

Dr. Roach is a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon who studied reconstructive, plastic and general surgery for seven years. He has been helping patients throughout Clearwater, Odessa, Tampa, Palm Harbor, Trinity and the surrounding areas to get the body of their dreams through holistic plastic surgery. Call the Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to schedule a consultation to discuss your body contouring needs and how Dr. Roach can help sculpt the shape you’ve been working towards.

5 Myths of Plastic Surgery

When it comes to medical issues there’s a lot of false information out there. To help you make informed choices about cosmetic procedures we’ve put together this list of the top 5 most common myths about plastic surgery:

1) Breast Implants Increase Your Risk of Developing Breast Cancer

According to the Susan G. Koman Foundation, “neither saline nor silicone breast implants appear to increase breast cancer risk.” In fact, some studies have even shown that women with implants have a slightly lower-than-average risk of developing breast cancer – a statistic which is attributed to the fact that women who choose to have breast implants tend to be fitter and more pro-active about their health care than those without implants.

2) Men Don’t Have Plastic Surgery

With the recent advances in plastic surgery and the increased awareness of the extensive benefits associated with cosmetic procedures, more men than ever are now opting to have plastic surgery. A recent survey by the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons revealed that 12 percent of adult men planned on having one or more cosmetic procedures in the future.

3) Plastic Surgery Is Only For The Wealthy

Plastic surgery is often much more affordable than you might expect, and in fact, many reconstructive procedures are either partially or fully covered under some insurance plans. While cosmetic procedures may be popularized by celebrities, our patients include people from all walks of life.

4) Liposuction Doesn’t Last

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells, which means they’re gone forever. However, if liposuction patients fail to maintain a stable weight through diet and exercise, the remaining fat cells can swell up and fill in the treated area, giving a false impression that the fat cells have ‘grown back.’

5) Plastic Surgery Leaves Visible Scars

Modern, minimally-invasive techniques mean that big, unsightly plastic surgery scars are now a thing of the past. In many cases, cosmetic procedures can be performed in a way that makes it virtually impossible to detect where incisions were made.

4 Reasons You Should Consider Botox

4 reasons to consider botoxDue to the natural effects of aging, sun exposure and even our own genetics, we are all prone to getting wrinkles and there is nothing wrong with looking to reverse that process. Botox is a safe and effective alternative that should be considered if you are looking to tackle undoing wrinkles. Here are 4 reasons why Botox might be right for you:

  1. Minimally Invasive – The procedure requires no incisions be made, but instead an ultra-fine needle being inserted directly into the desired location. Anesthetic may be used but is not necessary. The pain you feel is no more than that of any other injection.
  2. Quick Procedure – A Botox injection can be taken care of in roughly ten minutes and can provide almost immediate results. Typically, the surgeon may request that you frown or squint to showcase the problem areas to be targeted.
  3. No Recovery Time Needed – Since Botox injections can be done without any anesthetic, you can resume your daily activities right after leaving the procedure. Many other cosmetic procedures can take a week to recover and result in facial bruising, but the simplicity of Botox injections allows for a speedy recovery.
  4. Real Healing – Despite being described as an injection, the Botox or botulinum toxin isn’t filling the wrinkles in, but instead, it relaxes the muscle beneath to give a natural volume to your skin again. Differing from person to person, more treatments will be needed in the future, but the initial results last between 3 and 6 months providing you with lasting effects.

What You Should Know About Gummy Bear Breast Implants

gummy bear implantsThere are many reasons to want breast implants, whether it be to satisfy your desired look, increase uniformity, or just because you simply want them. With many advances in cosmetic surgery there are now several options to choose from. The newest stage in breast implant technology is cohesive gel implants, or as they are more frequently known, “gummy bear implants.”

Here are a few things you should know about the implants when considering what is right for you:

Firm and uniform – With gummy bear implants there is a significantly less chance of the implants becoming misshapen after surgery. The silicone inside is thicker than standard implants so they retain their shape better. They get their name from the thickness of this silicone, which has the consistency of gummy bears.

Safer – The increased firmness of these implants highly reduces your chance of capsular contracture. Regular saline and silicone implants cannot compete because they aren’t as firm.

No Leaks – Older types of breast implants have a tendency for the shell to fold or ripple, which leads to rips in the lining. This is less likely with a gummy bear implant because of the firmness. In the unlikely case of the shell breaking, there is no liquid component to leak out due to the high density of the gel.

Natural Look – Most women agree that cohesive gel implants have a more anatomically correct shape and more natural feel. Because of their firmness, they can be formed into a more realistic teardrop shape that is retained long after surgery.

Breast implants are a big commitment and being informed is crucial. Dr. John Roach can help you with any questions you may have about implants and selecting what implant is right for you. Call the Bayside Center for Plastic Surgery at (813) 528-8744 and schedule your free consultation today.
